?Why should you avoid leg on leg when sitting

Many people adopt leg-crossing when sitting, but this sitting position, in fact, may have negative effects that can harm the health of the body.

And Canadian orthopedic expert Brendon Talbot warns, through his account on "Tik Tok", that you should avoid putting one leg on the other while sitting because it can put pressure on a major drainage area in the lower extremities.

He explained: "All the blood from the lower extremities drains into the femoral vein (a large blood vessel in your thigh), which goes under the inguinal ligament (groin area)"

Unnecessary pressure can lead to circulation problems and eventually contribute to varicose veins, including varicose veins.
Varicose veins occur when the tiny valves inside the leg veins stop working properly, causing blood to pool in the veins, making them swollen and painful.

The increased pressure in the veins can also make the skin purple, dry and scaly. In addition to being unsightly, if left untreated, complications such as bleeding, chronic venous insufficiency (in which blood pressure rises due to valves not working properly, causing blood to pool as it is difficult for it to return to the heart from the legs) and skin ulcers may occur.

Many people do this sitting position, whether consciously or spontaneously.

Previous studies suggested that placing one leg on the other raises blood pressure slightly, because this position makes it difficult to pump blood towards the heart and increases resistance in the opposite direction.

Varicose veins are another reason that prevents people from crossing one leg over the other, as this procedure is said to disrupt the blood flow to the heart.

After Brendon warned that one leg should not be crossed, he advised regular exercise to keep the veins healthy.

"Exercise regularly to keep the blood flowing in your veins," he said. "This doesn't need to be resistance training, it can be something as simple as walking."

He added that walking for just 30 minutes each day can help. "Everything in the body depends on movement, right down to the cellular level," he explained.

Maintaining a healthy weight is another way to keep veins healthy, the expert said. He explained: This will reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure. High blood pressure can weaken blood vessel walls over time. This internal fat can put pressure on nearby vessels, restricting blood flow and increasing pressure on the veins.

He pointed out that you should also avoid sitting or standing for long periods and you should try to change your positions regularly throughout the day.
